Spiritually, a lottery represents our ability to take chances, to rely on fate rather than good judgement. The ?lottery of life? has the same basic meaning as the luck of the draw, in that certain conditions seem to be predestined through our genetics, our way of life or our intrinsic decisions. We appear not to be in control. A lottery can highlight all sorts of belief systems, some valid and some not. The idea of random selection particularly mechanically links with belief in a mechanistic universe. The lottery also denotes our attitude to greed and poverty and to the principle of winningthrough luck rather than effort. A lottery suggests the idea of gaining through taking a risk with money. Gambling is part of human nature almost since time began, but a lottery is less immediate and in today's society much less to do with trying to guess the will of the Divine. To dream of winning a lottery would suggest that one has either been lucky or clever in waking life. To dream of losing might suggest that someone else was in control of our destiny.
